
The Zotero interface offered everything I had been missing in Endnote and then some. I could simply import my Endnote library and started a testdrive. A Google search led me to Zotero, which was a breeze to install. I had some difficulty getting the two to work together, and when I finally did, there were drawbacks that made me look out for an alternative. 1 Endnote X included Endnote Web, a web-based implementation that looked interesting.

It all started when I upgraded from Endnote 7 to Endnote X to get Unicode support. The background to this posting is that I made the move from Endnote to Zotero two months ago - and I have never since considered going back. It bills itself as The Next-Generation Research Tool, and in this post I’ll try to explain why I think that’s true. Zotero is a free piece of software that lives in your browser, helping you to ‘collect, manage and cite your research sources’ in all sorts of beautiful ways. If you only need some help formatting a few citations in MLA, APA or Chicago, try out the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL). Examples of popular ones include Mendeley and Zotero. There are many other reference manager applications available, some free. Expanded Endnote Basic accounts are free for anyone with a UNR NetID. By downloading the Cite While You Write plug-in for Microsoft Word, you can access your library and instantaneously format your bibliography as you write your paper. Your Endnote Basic library is fully searchable, can be organized into groups, and can be shared with other researchers.


You can input groups of references from databases or add them in one at a time. Expanded Endnote Basic is online software that helps you to collect and manage a library of citations and output them in any of over 6000 bibliographic formats.
